Thailand beyond the standard route

Everyone knows Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands in the south. But Thailand is so much more. Think of mountain villages where you sleep among tea plantations, quiet bays without party boats and little restaurants where you're the only tourist. I travelled there for five weeks with our six-month-old daughter, and we didn't visit a single place from the standard route.

Where to go in Thailand?

The north

Mountains, tea plantations, hill villages and a cooler climate. Home to Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son and the lake at Ban Rak Thai.

Bangkok and the centre

Temples, markets, street food and old royal cities such as Ayutthaya.

The south

Islands and bays. From busy and well known to surprisingly quiet, if you know where to go.

Going to Thailand with a baby or toddler?

Thailand is a lovely country to travel with a little one: people adore children and there's rice and fresh fruit everywhere. I did it myself and am happy to share what worked.
